last year i brought a a cardboard box on a plane. protruding out of it was a sheetmetal frame with a pretty powerful dc stepper motor, a few gears, some weird looking polyjet parts, and a circuit board with a shitload of wires coming off of it. but it was in a box, so i guess it was okay. on wednesday, i'll have something else interesting with me. with pointy bits. hell, this thing's designed to mix liquids, even. i'd better put it in a box, too.

bike friendly? http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000725.html there was an interesting article in this morning's globe about mayor menino's newfound love of bicycling, and his intention to make boston less hostile towards bikes. this would, hypothetically, include bike lanes, more bike racks with security cameras to watch over them, and public showers to cleanse the road grime off before heading into the office.

i'm somewhat torn about this, since my reason to ride into the city is usually for fun, and as a result, i rather like the combative nature of it. i'd miss that if it were easy. on the other hand, bicycling is absolutely the best and fastest way to get around town, and more people would do it if it seemed a little less perilous. people in boston are already used to the idea that a car isn't always going to get them where they need to go the best, and already open to the idea of walking. a middle-ground solution on two wheels might really have a chance to catch on.

for fuck's sake http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000724.html worse than the seeming free-fall that's going on right now is the fact that (and i think i've mentioned this before), the red sox are just plain not any fun to watch half the time. even when they're winning. it's not for lack of brilliant antics by remy and orsillo. it's not because they're not likable. hell, it's not 'cause they're bad. it's just that they clearly should be playing better than they are. pretty much all the time.

like now.

photogenic, number 102 http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000723.html since i only had a couple hours at a stretch in new york, i couldn't hit any museums or anything like that, so i basically just wandered around with my camera.

as i wandered around midtown late friday night, i ran into a drunk guy slumped against a building. actually, i nearly stepped on him. he was out, complete and utter naptime. i looked to see if he was alive; he was dressed better than i was, and probably a little younger than i. i debated whether to wake him up and do something, but then i thought that maybe he wouldn't necessarily be appreciative, possibly quite the opposite. so i didn't do anything. in retrospect, though, i wish i had. i hope someone did.

A rough night

i took a lot of other pictures too.

you bring light in... Quiet morning But where's the dog? Escape route Covered up, sort of Stupid architects... In with the old Dreary rooftops Dressed for different things Bank of the Empire Nobody up for a workout Getting less colorful Indistinct A brightly-colored mess Merge ahead walking in light, glowing...

a little sound in a little amp http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000722.html i was lucky enough to see underworld twice in two nights. for those of you who don't know, they are totally my favoritest artist in the whole wide world. and for those of you who went last night, well, you probably know why. after two straight nights of finding a way to twitch and gyrate all 6'4" of me in a small space in time with the music, i'm a bit worn out this morning, but it was so worth it. i emerged into the frosty harbor air with my england jersey completely drenched (though it took seconds to dry; this is the reason that soccer jerseys are one of the world's most versatile articles of clothing) and dehydrated, but feeling great, really. i can say unequivocally that they were better in boston than the previous night in new york. the venue wasn't ideal, but it was louder, it was darker, and most importantly, the crowd was there to see a show and dance as opposed to there to see themselves dress stupid, smoke cigarettes ostentatiously, and talk through it. and while fewer folks seemed to recognize the songs and know all the words, i have to figure a lot of them are converts now.

productive http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000721.html today (meaning friday) i:

don't feel that bad after last night's game.

had a good meeting this morning.

ordered parts while crossing a street in manhattan.

saw underworld. who are still just unbelievable. people of boston, go buy the remaining tickets for tomorrow night's show.

danced with people I didn't know. and didn't speak a word. because I fucking suck. and it was loud.

had a couple pints in a mediocre beer bar, and took a mammoth amount of shit from smug new yorkers as the sox blew a 5-run lead.

wandered the streets with my camera st 1am.

music related, you have been warned, #132 http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000720.html i try to avoid writing about music, because while i have strong opinions about it and it's important to me, i'm singularly unable to articulate why this is so. nevertheless, here we are.

i saw genesis last night at the td banknorth fleet shawmut center garden, which was really cool. they were totally my favorite from, oh, 1986 to 1993. in middle school, the usual assortment of bullies liked to interrogate me while i awaited whatever indignity they had planned, and i probably should have lied about my favorite band, in retrospect. this, among other egregious transgressions, such as being very smart, and rather fat at the time, was grounds for further punishment still.

as a result, i couldn't help but think how odd it was to see a huge arena, more or less full of people, some of whom even looked like the 30-year-old, out-of-shape, considerably-less-intimidating version of the same guy who beat me upside the head with a no doubt underutilized math book seventeen years earlier.

it was actually a really good show, and while they left out plenty of my favorites, phil collins kept his more regrettable tendencies towards sappy ballads and ruining his own best songs in check. better still, he played the drums quite a lot (usually the people playing the plastic buckets outside of fenway or the garden sound pretty good, but surely their tips were down last night), and they played the full versions of most of their songs, complete with the lengthy interludes that probably had some people scratching their head, but were my favorite part, usually.

i had such a good time that i stuffed some poor guy with a dashboard confessional shirt into a newspaper box on my walk to the t. he was asking for it, i swear.

shock absorbers http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000719.html i rode 56 miles yesterday. not for any real reason, i just needed to get on my bike and clear my head some, so i just pointed the handlebars west and pedaled like a motherfucker. interestingly, while climbing hills makes your quads burn like crazy, they're never what i feel the next day; for me it's always the shoulders that are worst, too much time hunched over with stiff arms transmitting every rut, pothole, and patch directly to where it hurts. but it was still awesome, so wonderful and cool, so many smoothly rolling hills, so few cars, what with people all watching the football game, i imagine. i found a few new satisfying climbs to sate my urge to mutter profanities while turning over a stupidly high gear going up them. i broke the speed limit, doing 37 in a 35. usually i don't get out again after the pmc (there's still time to donate, dear reader!) , for a variety of reasons, but this year i was dying to go ride again for some reason.

getting my room put together, finally, which is to say there's now a more respectable pile of clothes on the floor. at some point i will get pictures hung, crossing my fingers on a curtain-rod-wire solution from ikea.

speaking of ikea, i've been taking pictures in stores surreptitiously with my iphone lately, because it's interesting. stores don't like it when you photograph stuff, say some coworkers who've been nearly thrown out for doing so. i was struck, after going to costco friday night and then ikea saturday morning, by the difference between the two. they're both hell-bent on efficiency, but the former focuses on excess, offers scant choice between generally poorly-designed products, and treats you like a valued criminal, whereas the other feeds you on the cheap, makes sure you're comfortable, and makes it obvious that they'd prefer the relationship be mutually beneficial and pleasant. and fucking costco no longer carries gatorade mix.

Pay for your crap and leave Emily, trapped in the closet We have a lot to be humble about

Also, here's an awesome picture of dan from last weekend:

There's nothing good on!

short attention span, #1138 http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000718.html unsurprisingly, the whiny masses got their way. good ol' uncle steve caved, and is giving me a $100 gift certificate as an i'm-sorry-you-bought-your-iphone-so-early present. boy does his pr department write good letters. i'm not the least bit bitter, actually. in the three months i've had my iphone, it's allowed me to do dozens of things that would otherwise be impossible, slower, or a pain in the ass, wherever i damn well please. that includes doing work from the back seat of a rental car somewhere in the midwest, checking on the sox from somewhere else, juggling phone calls and voicemails from the office, finding suz coffee and donuts west of st. louis, giving a guy in raleigh directions even though i had no idea where the hell i was, taking dozens of pictures of prototypes and random crap, ditching the laptop, surviving in an apartment that doesn't have cable...

on that last point. comcast blows. it's bad enough that rcn wasn't available and we're now paying $15 more per month for slower connections and fewer channels, but yesterday they stood me up for an installation appointment, claiming their voicemail droid had told me it'd been rescheduled. a: fuck you for rescheduling it. b: have your jawas take a look at your voicemail bot. between the fact that i work a job that bills out my time, and the fact that i work goddamn long hours, i kinda begrudge them that four hours. kinda a lot. my time is valuable to me. more so when i think of how i could be wasting it in front of bad tv right now.

so yeah, jessica and i moved to a new place. the old place was awesome in its way, but i like to think of it as a bold experiment that just didn't work quite as planned, kinda symbolic of the past year, now that i think of it. i am not sad to leave. this is a time for starting anew, notwithstanding the typical connotations autumn has.

and it's really the best time of the year, and each and every year i remind myself to savor every time i walk out the door and find it bracingly cool, every time i wake up at 3 in the morning and roll back under warm blankets, every time the sun just looks a little less intimidating outside. but every year i look up and find that it's already december.

i get to play soccer a week from tonight.

frak nbc http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000717.html here's a really great editorial on how dumb it is for nbc to try to charge $4.99 for shows on itunes.

so now i have to find a way to watch battlestar galactica on its regular night? boo!

part of this nutritious breakfast http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000715.html went to the phoenix landing in central square this morning. it's a bar, you see. and yet there is breakfast to be had. why eat breakfast in a bar? because there are scores of people watching premiership soccer at 8 in the morning, shouting exhortations at their side, swearing at the refs as only the english dare, and eating a decidedly british-style morning meal, complete with a pint or three of you-know-what.

against my better judgment, i'll probably be back tomorrow for man u vs. spurs.

smacked up http://blackllamafaction.org/archives/000713.html there are some days where, for whatever reason, everything in my vast itunes library simply sounds better. it's a happy coincidence when this happens on a day where i have a ton of shit to do and need to buckle down. sometimes it happens when you don't get to sit down with your music for a while. sometimes there's no discernible cause for it. either way, it's a happy thing. autechre sounds crisper and clearer. tears for fears don't sound the least bit dated. underworld's lyrics make a startling amount of sense. the prodigy are seeing that my bitch gets smacked up, i'm zoned in on solidworks, whacked out on four cups of coffee, and i'm liking it.
