appreciation

a lot of ink has been spilled talking about
steve jobs' health

i won't bother attempting to duplicate that effort

it's more interesting to think about why
he matters to some of us
i mean hell
all he does is sell us gadgets
right

but what it boils down to for me is the
simple pleasure of
enjoying the work of people who are
great
at what they do

and of course in this case
that's part of the fascination
because none of us can really say exactly what
it is
that he is so good at

it is in a way
no different than watching david ortiz mash the ball
watching the latest pixar film [hmm bad example or brilliant example]
or listening to a radiohead album
the common thread is enjoying the work of
individuals who are doing what they do with absurd proficiency

or on a more down to earth level
being proud of your friends' success
or pleased to work with smart people

it boils down to a simple giddy thrill
of being in the presence of greatness
in quantities large or small and near and far
of being glad to live in a time where people are
doing cool things

and greedily we ask for more
