a question of purpose

it's somewhat ironic
that while the term 'blog' is nearly
universally known and in its ascendancy
an iconic form of it seems to be mutating
beyond recognition

the personal blog
originally the personal webpage
a labor of equal parts
love and egomania
seems to be a little bit pointless
at times

in this age of twitter
and facebook

after all when you can express your thoughts in brief
easily digestible blurbs
replete with photos or cute icons
with a built-in audience of your friends
and easily discoverable by strangers

why go through the trouble of paragraphs
of lengthy diatribes
of rants

and especially why go through the trouble of hosting it yourself
and fussing with the look of it

at the same time
while i'm fully addicted to twitter
and love the facebook iphone app

neither of them allow me to express myself the way this does

and i'm not talking about punctuation

at the end of the day
my audience is me

and you guys
[you know the ones in my imagination]
are incidental
